  Our Purpose

The Euripedes Barsanulfo Doctrine Center is a non-profit organization that aims to promote the study of Spiritism and the way of life it proposes. This goal is accomplished through weekly meetings and through charitable activities.

to What is Spiritism?

  What is Spiritism?

The Spiritism Doctrine, or Spiritism, has not been created by any one person. It is compatible with the teachings of Christ, but its fundamental principals can be found in all religions. According to The Spirits’ Book, it has three essential dimensions:

1 - Communication between the physical and the spiritual realms
2 - The philosophy deduced from them
3 - The application of that philosophy to daily living

The mission of the Spiritist doctrine is precise to enlighten us regarding our future state and to enable us to experience it, within certain limits, through direct and conscious interaction with the spiritual world. The theoretical essence of the doctrine can be found in Allan Kardec’s books:

The Spirits’ Book – with regard to the philosophical aspect of the doctrine;

The Medium’s Book – which contains its practical and experimental aspects;

The Gospel According to Spiritism – it contains its moral and ethical aspects.

to Who is Allan Kardec?

  Who is Allan Kardec?

Allan Kardec was the name adopted by a highly respected educator and philosopher born in Lyon, France, on October 3rd, 1804. He taught several courses in a prestigious French school, ranging from physiology to astronomy. He also organized and taught free classes in his own home, from 1835 to 1854.

At the age of 50, Kardec first heard of mysterious phenomena in the USA and Europe involving tables that seemed to be moving at their own will. The investigation of these phenomena has led him to work with writing mediums – that is an involuntary manner under the spirits, being their interpreters and instruments. Allan Kardec, then, posed several questions to spirits working through mediums from many different countries. This is how The Spirits’ Book was first published, in 1857, as a result of a comparative analysis of the answers he has received from these mediums with transcripts he had accumulated based on his own experiences.

Allan Kardec’s boundless contribution to the Spiritist Doctrine was further accomplished through the publication of The Medium’s Book, The Gospel According to the Spiritism, Heaven and Hell, Posthumous Work and Christian Spiritism. In addition, Allan Kardec founded the Spiritist Society of Paris and La Revue Spirite, a journal he edited until his death in March, 31st, 1869. (Adapted from the editor’s note on The Spirits’ Book)

  Who is Euripedes Barsanulfo?

Born on May 1st, 1880, in the city of Sacramento, MG, Brazil, Euripedes Barsanulfo became aware of the Spiritist Doctrine through books from Allan Kardec and experiences in the Doctrine Centers. After receiving a message from a Spiritual guide, and after being convinced of the importance and beauty of the Spiritist Doctrine, Euripedes Barsanulfo devoted the rest of his life to working in several ways in accordance with the teachings of Spiritism.

His intentions and work were not always supported (several times opposed) by his family and many members of his community. Despite this, he developed educational and charitable activities through the organization Grupo Espirita Esperanca e Caridade which he founded in 1905. Two years later, he founded the Allan Kardec School.

Over the years, he became a well-developed healing medium and used this opportunity to help hundreds of families in need. Under the orientation of Dr. Bezerra de Menezes, he founded the Farmacia Espirita Esperanca e Caridade – a place dedicated to the medical treatment of all in need of help. Needless to say, none of his work had financial profit as a goal. From 1907 to 1912, he served his city as a politician, another way he found to positively contribute to his community. Euripedes Barsanulfo died in 1918, leaving us with a great examples of positive and constructive existence.
